FLUX
FLUX is a backpack concept I designed in parallel with the T1 helmet. The idea is similar in that I wanted to create a large bike light surface area that would be on the rider rather than the bike, but would not appear as safety gear during the daytime. I chose a backpack for those that prefer not to wear helmets with the idea that the same tech could easily work in outerwear, messenger bags and panniers.
FLUX presented two challenges in completing the design. First, this would be my first attempt at designing soft goods, and more importantly, how would I fit a flexible light with a large surface area into a backpack without hindering the normal features and making it water proof at the same time?
I began the project with sketches to determine the proportions and lines of the backpack as well as the placement of the light source.
After sourcing a manufacturer for the optics and PCB and supplying them with technical requirements I began working with a sample maker to refine the bag design so she could begin making the patterns we would review with the electronics once I received first samples.
After experimenting with several different light source materials, such as Electroluminescent Sheet (EL), edge lit light pipes and LED tape I settled on scored and layered fiber optics which were adhered to a mylar sheet. The sheet was flexible, water proof and only 1 mm thick making it easy to assemble into the bag. This is a demonstration of the first proof of concept assembly.
By incorporating a remote power button into the left shoulder strap the user is able to operate the lights while on the go. The back-lit button matches the current light mode indicating whether the light is on/off steady, flashing etc.
The messenger-style top flap was more than a style accent. It provided the same waterproof protection as a roll-top bag, but creates a much larger opening allowing for an easier access to the gear inside.
