I started by imagining the least likely furniture piece that you would see in acrylic which, to me, is a rocking chair. From there I decided to make it from one solid piece as to avoid glue joints or hardware which are difficult to manufacture with out bubbles or hazing in the acrylic. Lastly, I wanted it to be very clean with simple lines, unlike most rocking chairs. Sway was featured in Plexi-Craft's 2012 ICFF show.
After quickly sketching and modeling the rocker in Rhino, my weapon of choice for 3D, I was able to use the unroll surface tool to create a cut file and send it to Plexi-Craft with renderings. The next week they sent back some simple process photos and images of the final polished piece. This became my first licensed furniture design.
